Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) with a scheme outlay of Rs 778 crore is earning its end on 30th September, offering a Rs. 10,000 subsidy on electric two-wheelers.

If you’ve been thinking about getting an electric scooter, here’s your final call: the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024 is wrapping up soon. Yep, the time is running out, and if you want to avail that sweet government subsidy, you’ve got until September 30 to make your move.

EMPS 2024

Launched on April 1, 2024, the EMPS 2024 has been a big-time savior for electric scooter buyers without burning a hole in their pocket. It was originally set to expire on July 31, however, the scheme has been extended by two months, giving skeptical EV buyers (and those waiting for the perfect moment) a bit more time. But, like all good things, this too must come to an end, and it is ending on September 30.

To make EVs more affordable and promote adoption, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has not only extended the deadline to avail subsidy on electric scooters but also increased the budget from ₹500 crore to a whopping ₹778 crore. That’s a significant step, and it’s all in the name of making electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers more affordable and accessible to the masses.

Subsidy Amount on Electric Scooter

So, how much exactly is the subsidy amount for potential electric scooter buyers? Let’s break it down. Under EMPS 2024, buyers can get a subsidy of up to ₹10,000 on an electric two-wheeler or Rs. 5,000 per kWh of the battery capacity, whichever is lower. That’s some serious savings! And with the initial prices of electric scooters typically on the higher side, this e-scooter subsidy can make a huge difference in your purchase decision.

There’s more! The scheme aims to support 5,60,789 electric vehicles in total. It totals 5,00,080 electric two-wheelers to be precise. While privately owned vehicles are included, the real focus is on making public transportation cleaner and greener.

Why the Rush?

If you’re wondering why there’s such a rush to buy an electric scooter, it’s because the clock is ticking, and once the EMPS 2024 electric scooter subsidy ends, these financial benefits will disappear faster than a hot pizza at a party. Once this happens, your dream of owning an electric vehicle can be on hold till a beneficial FAME III policy is rolled out.

After the FAME II scheme ended in March 2024, we witnessed a shocking price hike of about 25% for electric two-wheelers, which was itself a big turn-off. The EMPS 2024 has been a much-needed relief provided as a last chance by the government to own and experience electric mobility in India affordably, but once it’s gone, we might be looking at similar price surges again.

Companies like Hero Motocorp, Bajaj, TVS, Ather, and Ola are among the big names that have been riding the subsidy wave. These companies are not only offering discounts to consumers but they are also getting approvals to claim subsidies from the Ministry of Heavy Industries.

This is because of their domestic manufacturing supply chain aligning with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. So, if you’ve had your eye on a specific electric scooter model from one of these brands, now is the time to make the purchase.

How to Claim Electric Scooter Subsidy

If you’re ready to make the switch to an electric scooter, claiming your subsidy is hassle-free. Check Your Eligibility to receive the subsidy by making sure you haven’t already claimed a subsidy for another electric two-wheeler. The subsidy can be availed only once per person. Also, proper checking and validation of the documents is a must. Make sure the name on your ID matches the name you’re using to register the scooter. Now, Head to your nearest EV dealer, make your purchase, and the subsidy will be provided based on the scooter’s battery capacity or a straight deduction of Rs. 10,000.

So, if you’re thinking of going electric, there’s no better time than now. The EMPS 2024 offers substantial savings for electric scooter buyers, but it is under a deadline till September 30. So, why wait? Get out there, find the perfect electric scooter, and take advantage of the EMPS 2024 subsidy on electric scooters while you still can.
