The organic waste-powered EV charging station is a joint venture between the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation(BMC) and Aerocar Clean Energy. Additionally, BMC is aiming to build 24 new EV charging stations which will be powered by a waste-to-energy process.

  • This plant which converts waste to energy has already used 1.5 lakh kgs of organic waste to generate energy.

As of now, India has a total number of 1,742  operational public electric vehicle charging stations, Nitin Gadkari notified in the Parliament on 31 March 2022.

Adding more to the number on 9th May 2022,  Minister of Environment and Tourism, Aditya Thackeray inaugurated India’s first organic waste-powered fast electric-vehicle charging station in Mumbai.

The charging station is powered by energy regenerated from organic household waste. This EV charging station is a joint venture of AeroCare Clean Energy and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Along with that 220 unit of energy is generated from this organic waste management plant which also powers the streetlight.

Matoshree Minatai Thackeray Park near Haji Ali, Mumbai was established in the month of September 2021, is a local plant that converts household organic waste into energy. This plant has already used 1.5 lakh kgs of organic waste to generate energy. Along with that Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is also aiming to set up 24 new EV charging stations in the near future.

Addressing the inauguration of the organic waste-powered fast electric-vehicle charging stations in Mumbai, Aditya Thackeray said that “ The government is also planning to launch such organic waste powered EV charging stations on highways, which will help to manage the organic waste and also it inspire people to make a shift towards EV.”

As Mumbai generates around 6,000 metric tonnes of waste on a single day, out of which 70 percent waste is generated from the household wet waste. Turning household organic waste into energy is a great initiative started by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which will allow them to manage the organic waste of the city properly.

“The company is looking for expanding and opening more such organic waste-powered fast electric-vehicle charging stations in Mumbai. Along with that to bring awareness among people about this organic waste-powered fast electric-vehicle charging station” said Ankit Zaveri, CEO of AeroCare Clean Energy.

Converting Waste into energy will eventually help in reducing the carbon emission from the environment by making faster and better adoption of EVs in India.
