NHEV will conduct EV test trials on the Chennai-Tiruchi corridor for a month starting on World EV Day on September 9.

Key Highlights:

  • NHAI’s TechTrial Run III will be conducted on a 332 km stretch between Chennai and Tiruchi.
  • NHEV EV trails to include electric, hydrogen, and zero-emission freight vehicles.

Imagine driving from Chennai to Tiruchi without stopping for fuel. This could soon be a reality, thanks to NHAI’s ambitious electric highway project and NHEV EV Trails. The National Highways Authority of India is set to launch the third phase of its National Highways for EV (NHEV) TechTrial Run on World EV Day, September 9, 2024, a significant step towards India’s electric mobility revolution.

Continuing the chain of success of previous Electric vehicle trial runs that focused on electric SUVs and buses, NHEV’s third iteration aims to create a more comprehensive understanding of EV performance in real-world conditions.

The first TechTrial Run, conducted on the Delhi-Jaipur highway, laid the groundwork for checking the viability of electric vehicles on long-distance highways. This time the 332 km long Chennai-Tiruchi corridor has been carefully selected as a testing ground for NHEV EV Trails due to its heavy traffic and varied terrain, providing a real-world challenge for these test electric vehicles.

Moreover, NHAI’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure development is evident from its recent Guinness World Record for laying 75 km of highway in just under five days. This achievement underscores the organization’s ability to execute large-scale infrastructure projects efficiently, a crucial factor in supporting the growth of electric vehicle charging networks nationwide.

Not just electric, hydrogen, and zero-emission freight vehicles, the third NHEV EV trails to include several electric scooters and bikes

This time, NHEV is taking a giant leap forward by including electric, hydrogen, and zero-emission freight vehicles in the trial. Approximately 6 electric buses, 6 electric four-wheelers, and a large number of two and three-wheelers will participate in the one-month-long NHEV EV Trails. The data collected from these diverse electric vehicle types will provide invaluable insights into the challenges and opportunities for the transition to sustainable public and private transport in India.

“We are excited to embark on this new phase of our electric mobility journey,” said Sh. Santosh Kumar Yadav, IAS, Chairperson. “TechTrial Run III is a crucial step towards creating a robust EV ecosystem in India. By testing a wide range of electric vehicles, we aim to accelerate the adoption of cleaner and more sustainable transportation.”

Engineers, EV manufacturers, and environmentalists are eagerly anticipating the results of this mega trial, likely to start on September 9, 2024. The success of NHEV’s initiative could pave the way for widespread EV adoption, reducing carbon emissions, and improving air quality in Indian cities.

Beyond the technical benefits, this trial is likely to affect humans and the environment in a very positive way.. The lives of ordinary citizens stand to benefit immensely from the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Reduced fuel costs, lower maintenance expenses, and cleaner air are just some of the advantages that electric vehicles offer.

To ensure the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, NHAI is also focusing on developing a robust EV charging infrastructure across Indian highways. The organization is working tirelessly to establish charging stations at regular intervals along major highways, making long-distance travel in electric vehicles a convenient and hassle-free experience.

As India strives to achieve its climate goals, the transition to electric mobility is imperative. NHEV’s TechTrial Run III is a beacon of hope, demonstrating the country’s commitment to a greener and more sustainable future.
