A few years back, Tata Motors ignited the spark of Made in India EV technology with the introduction of Ziptron technology in the Tata Tigor EV sedan. Since then, Tata’s EV technology has grown by leaps and bounds, turning into a force of innovation. Let’s take a look at how Tata’s EV journey has evolved from Ziptron to Gen2 and what are the new EV technologies coming next from Tata’s R&D labs:
Ziptron: A Game Changer
- Cars Using Ziptron: Tata Nexon EV, Tata Tigor EV.
Ziptron is Tata Motor’s signature high-voltage electric vehicle (EV) architecture technology. It includes a permanent magnet AC motor, a high energy density lithium-ion battery, and an advanced battery management system to offer efficient performance, long-range, and fast charging capabilities
When Tata Motors launched the Ziptron technology, it was like discovering something completely new in the automotive world. Ziptron wasn’t just another EV technology, it changed the game for Indian electric vehicles. It gave EVs the power, reliability, and charging efficiency that people needed.
The Tata Nexon EV used Ziptron technology after it was first introduced in the Tata Tigor EV, and it quickly became a favorite in India. With a driving range of over 300 km and the ability to go from 0 to 60 km/h in just 4.6 seconds, Tata showed everyone that EVs could be both practical and fun.
“Ziptron was our answer to the doubters,” says Mr. Shailesh Chandra, President of Tata Motors’ Passenger Vehicle Business Unit. “We wanted to prove that EVs could be powerful, reliable, and enjoyable to drive.”
Tata’s Gen 2 – Acti.EV Platform
- Cars using Gen 2/Acti.EV – Tata Punch EV, Tata Curvv EV, Harrier EV (upcoming), Sierra EV(Upcoming)
As more people started buying EVs, their expectations from Tata Motors grew. In response to such demand od the latest EV technology, Tata Motors introduced the Gen 2 EV platform, also known as the Acti.EV platform. This is Tata’s latest pure EV architecture, designed to make electric cars even more efficient and high-performing. Gen 2 builds on the success of Ziptron and takes it to the next level offering customers more driving range, more features, and more excitement.
The recently launched Tata Curvv EV is the first model to showcase this new EV technology. With a range of up to 500 km on a single charge, it’s designed to make long drives easier and more convenient. The Gen2/Acti.The EV platform will also underpin other upcoming Tata electric cars, including the Harrier EV, and Sierra EV.
“With Gen2, we’re not just following trends; we’re setting them,” says Mr. Anand Kulkarni, Vice President of the Product Line, Electric Vehicle and ALFA Architecture. “It’s all about giving our customers more—more range, more features, and more excitement.”
Land Rover’s D8 Platform
Tata Motors also made use of the D8 platform, originally developed by Land Rover. It is known for its robustness and versatility. Tata Motors has adapted this platform for its EVs, ensuring high performance, safety, and reliability.
This platform, used in models like the Tata Harrier and Tata Safari, has been adapted for Indian road conditions and now it is integrated into Tata’s EV technology. The D8 platform ensures that Tata’s EVs are not just powerful but also safe and reliable.
“The D8 platform gives us a strong foundation to build on,” says Mr. Chandra. “It’s like combining the best of Land Rover’s engineering with Tata’s innovation.”
For people who own an EV or are thinking of buying one, Tata’s move from Ziptron to Gen 2/Acti.ev means longer drives without worrying about running out of battery, faster charging times, and a smooth driving experience.
The Future of Tata’s EVs
So, what’s next on Tata’s EV architecture journey? Experts suggest that Tata is already working on a Gen 3 EV platform, which could include self-driving capabilities and even better battery technology. While the details are still under wraps, one thing is clear, Tata Motors is committed to leading the way in latest EV technology.
“We’re just getting started,” says Mr. Chandra, from Tata Motors with a smile. “The future of transportation is electric, and we’re excited to be a big part of it.”
From Ziptron to Gen 2/Acti.ev, and beyond, Tata Motors has portrayed that they put innovation at the forefront of their EV journey. With each new technology launch, they are offering more than what people demand. For EV owners, this means a future filled with exciting possibilities, reliable and safe electric cars from India’s automotive giant Tata Motors.
