What is UPI EV Charging ?
UPI EV charging lets EV users start charging instantly without any operator apps by simply scanning a station’s Pay QR code with any UPI app. Upon payment, the Payment Gateway (PG) instantly signals the Charge Point Management System (CMS), which automatically unlocks the charger to deliver the purchased power seamlessly.

Frequently asked questions
about UPI EV charging
What is UPI EV charging?
UPI EV charging means using UPI payment apps to pay for an EV charging session. In a basic setup, the driver scans a QR code and pays. In an integrated setup, the payment is verified by the backend and connected to the charger, so the selected connector can start through the charging management system.
Can UPI payment automatically start an EV charger?
Yes, but only when the payment flow is connected to the charger backend or CSMS. For OCPP-ready chargers, payment confirmation can be mapped to a connector and used to trigger a remote start command.
Is static UPI QR enough for EV charging?
Static UPI QR can collect payment, but it may not automatically identify the connector, verify availability or start the charger. For automated charging, a dynamic QR, payment webhook and backend integration are usually needed.
Do users need to download another app?
UPI EV Charging is designed around an app-free UPI payment flow, so users can pay through familiar UPI apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or other supported UPI apps.
Do users need to preload a wallet for UPI EV Charging??
No. UPI EV Charging is built around direct UPI payment for supported stations, so users do not need to preload a separate wallet or keep money locked in multiple charging apps.
Can existing stations be upgraded to UPI enabled stations?
Yes, existing EV charging stations can be upgraded to UPI-enabled stations if the charger, firmware, CSMS, and payment setup support the required integration. OCPP-compatible AC and DC chargers are the best fit for automated UPI charging flows.
What does a CPO need to enable UPI EV charging?
For upgrading to a UPI-enabled station, a CPO usually needs an app-controlled charger, a payment gateway, backend or CSMS access, support process, and testing for payment-to-charging behaviour.
What happens if payment succeeds but charging does not start?
In UPI enabled stations, if charging sessions does not start after payment, the UPI flow verifies the payment reference, connector status, and refunds the paid amount automatically.
Does Ecopass replace UPI apps?
No. Ecopass doesn’t replace usual UPI apps, but adds EV-specific discovery, station details, connector information, and pricing through ecomaps, and later guides the user to scan the available gun QR for payment, which starts the charging session.
Why should CPOs enable UPI charging?
UPI charging lowers payment friction by removing the need for the CPO apps and their confusing app screens till payment and initiating charging, creating more chances for completed charging sessions from the same hardware.
What is Unified Bharat e-Charge?
Unified Bharat e-Charge, or UBC, is a national EV charging interoperability initiative to simplify discovery, access and payment across participating charging networks.
